For the purposes of categorisation on Skip Hire Guide .com the section known as Skip Hire Scotland – Central refers to the central region of Scotland. This includes the two biggest cities in Scotland – Edinburgh and Glasgow – as well as the following counties; Argyllshire, Perthshire, Angus, Kincardineshire, West Lothian, Fife, Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire, Dumbartonshire, Bute and Renfrewshire. Sitting between the Highlands and the Scottish Uplands this area is sometimes known as the “Central Belt”.

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city, the third most populated city in the UK and one of the top 20 leading financial centres in Europe. The wider Glasgow area has a population of over 2.3 million people. Of the ten largest UK insurance companies, eight have a base or headquarters in Glasgow. In 1990 Glasgow was a European City of Culture. Glasgow was also the site of the first ever international football match which was held in 1872. The game was played between England and Scotland and the final score was 0-0. Celtic and Rangers both come from Glasgow and are some of the games biggest rivals.

Glasgow may be Scotland’s largest city but it is not the capital city – that honour is bestowed upon Edinburgh. The largest festival of comedy in the world is held in Edinburgh the UK’s 7th biggest city, The Edinburgh Comedy Festival. One of the most famous new years eves parties is held in Edinburgh and Edinburgh holds the title of 2nd most visited city in the UK. Xi’an in China – home of the Terracotta Warriors is twinned with Edinburgh. The county of West Lothian – birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots is close to the centre of Scotlands capital city.

The 2nd largest county in Scotland on the west coast of the central belt is Argyllshire. Argyll and Bute is the now the administrative area that Argyll is part of.

Perthshire is another large county in central Scotland. The city of Perth in Western Australia took its name from the scottish county town of Perth.

On the east coast of central Scotland is the county of Angus – the county town of Angus is Forfar. Kincardineshire is home to a number of castles to the north east of Angus on the coast. Two miles south of Stonehaven is the very impressive Dunnottar castle one of Kincardineshire’s castle’s.

Home to St Andrew’s University on the east coast of central Scotland – thought to be one of the oldest 30 universities in the world that is still going and the oldest university in Scotland.

Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire, Dumbartonshire and Renfrewshire lie in a line across the centre of Scotland. Dunbartonshire is home to Loch Lomond – which was voted the 6th best natural wonder in Britain in a 2005 Radio Times poll.
