Reading became the county town of Berkshire in 1867 and now has a huge student population because of its two universities. In 1999 a large shopping centre was built and the Oracle, has been a popular shopping destination since. Reading is also home to one of the oldest schools in England – Reading school.

The town of Slough, which is situated in between Reading and London is a borough and is the most ethnically diverse borough in Berkshire. It is also the most ethnically diverse borough in England, outside of London.

South of the river Thames is Windsor it is in the Berkshire borough called “The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead” Windsor is best known for the castle which brings a huge amount of tourism to the area. Windsor Castle is the world’s largest inhabited castle and is one of the three principle residences for the British Royal Family. In November 1992 a fire ravaged through the castle and damaged over 100 rooms – completely destroying nine of them.

Another major tourist destination near the Berkshire town of Windsor is Legoland it opened in 1996 on the site of the old Windsor Safari Park. In the same Berkshire borough as these tourist destinations is Maidenhead. Maidenhead is the home to a bridge that was originally built in 1280. The one that stands on the site now was built in 1777.

Bracknell, a new town which was designated in 1949, was planned for a population of 25 thousand but now has a population closer to fifty thousand.

The Royal Military Academy is  in the Berkshire town of Sandhurst. Prince Harry and Prince William have been to the academy.

Wokingham is a civil parish in the south east of Berkshire. The town was rated as the number one place to live in the UK in 2007 by the Halifax building society.
