Skips come in a number of different sizes, from small skips ideal for small amounts of garden waste, right through to large skips which are great for house renovations where there will be lots of debris.

There are a number of things that you can’t put in a skip. These include Asbestos, Tyres, TV’s, PC Monitors, Freezers and Fridges, Car Batteries, Plasterboard, Paint Tins and things that could explode. If you are unsure whether you can put a particular item in your skip, you should always ask your hire company – it is better to be safe than sorry.
Skips must not be over filled - a skip must be level loaded so that it is safe when being transported, so it is important to make sure you get a large enough skip for your requirements

| Where are you planning on putting the Skip? |
If you are hoping to put the skip on a public road you will need to get a skip permit from your local council. This won’t be necessary if you are putting the skip on your own property. Permits can be applied for with your local council. The skip hire company should be able to help you with this.
If the skip is put on a public highway, it can’t be more than 5m long or more than 2m wide and must be positioned so it doesn't obstruct drivers, pedestrians, drainage, manholes or anything that could need to be accessed by the authorities.
| When do you need the skip? |
You should agree the timescale with your skip hire company before the skip is delivered. This is both for delivery date and collection date. This is also important for the permit as skip hire permits will have an expiry date on them.
